TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Dozens of people came to the Terre Haute Police Department headquarters to show their support for fallen officers.
At the Fallen Officer Ceremony, Law Enforcement Officers who made the ultimate sacrifice were remembered. Terre Haute Police Department was joined by the Vigo County Sheriff’s Office and the Seelyville Town Marshal to participate in an Honor Guard ceremony.
Names of fallen officers were read aloud publicly during the event. Sgt. Sears with THPD said between THPD and VCSO, there have been a total of 20 officers who have died in the line of duty.
Sears said he appreciates the community’s support.
“It’s an emotional day. I mean three of my best friends are on the statues standing behind me, you know that I’ve lost throughout my career. But we do this for them. We do this for their families. It’s a place to come. It’s a place to show your appreciation of them and that’s why we have the statues. That’s why we have the names on the memorial,” he said.
On May 15 there will be a wreath ceremony as part of Peace Officers Memorial Day at THPD HQ. During the ceremony the Honor Guard will stand watch over the wreath from 4 p.m. until midnight. Residents are encouraged to stop by and drop off donations or say a quick prayer of support.
